The base is made of unshrunk wool, while the lettering is knitted with cotton and has been heavily shrunk. This causes the unshrunk wool to shrink strongly, making the lettering in the cotton part appear to be raised, resulting in a unique, impactful knit and Cardigans that is also excellent for keeping you warm.
